TEAM WORKZ
extreme Weather Relief Fund
At TEAM WORKZ, we understand what it means to be homeless. We go to the campsites. We meet our homeless wherever they are. We answer their calls. We listen to their needs. We deliver warm sleeping bags, heaters, winter-grade tents, warm clothing, incidentals, food, and temporary housing to homeless men, women, and single-parent families each year. TEAM WORKZ relies solely on donated funds plus thousands of volunteer hours to help our homeless neighbors.
How do we find the homeless?
We are either invited to help by our community partners or receive a direct call from those in need. We receive at least 10 calls for help per day and at least 40 walk-ins per month. During warmer weather, more people will come in person for services. By our unofficial conservative count, there are at least 100 homeless who migrate through or are temporarily camped inside the urban footprint of the Southern Pines-Aberdeen-Pinehurst-Pine Bluff-Whispering Pines area that we assist, and at least another 100+ homeless are scattered throughout Moore County, North Carolina.
TEAM WORKZ services not just the homeless but those in need who have shelter and still can't feed their families or provide clothing. TEAM WORKZ does not discriminate against those in need. We refer to those as "Pre-Homeless" for they are only a paycheck or two away from being homeless.
How do we help the homeless?
We first provide basic emergency care for extreme weather relief. This “stop-gap” relief may include a hotel room or suitable shelter, food, and - as applicable - clothing, hygiene incidentals along with a variety of camping gear/first aid kits, etc. where needed.
Secondly, when appropriate, we provide transitional care by assigning a counselor to the homeless person(s) and families. The counselor can help with job placement, relocation services, transportation, counseling, obtaining identification documents, and other affiliated services. Our program is only for those motivated to do their part, with our helping hand, to graduate from homelessness to stable independence. TEAM WORKZ has a short-term strategy from entry to exit.
What is our vision for helping the homeless in the future?
We understand the heart-breaking moment of having to release a vulnerable homeless person back into the outside weather to be re-impacted by bad conditions after they received that first “stop-gap” relief. We understand the horror of having a campsite destroyed by public authorities in the name of corporate public good, which ignores the homeless victim.
It is not helpful for public agencies to destroy homeless camp sites; arrest parents or put them in jail or be dumped at the city or county limits; or confiscate their children, their vehicles, their tents, sleeping bags, food, and gear. The result is our homeless become destitute, afraid, depressed, and hopeless. Many turn to drugs and or alcohol to combat their depression.
Therefore, we at TEAM WORKZ are paving the way for a Transitional Advancement Center campus with longer-term strategy programs, housing, and affiliated services. For more information, click here.
